Still derived with an Aboriginal origin, Balgowlah means "north harbour" in reference to its position from Port Jackson. The British settlers used to call it Little Manly. Australia's first prime minister Edmund Barto used to live in Whitehall in White Street, which is presently the Norwegian Seamen's Church. Balgowlah's main commercial area is nestled in Condamine Street and Sydney Road with major businesses such as Harvey Norman and Bunnings Warehouse. Locally known as Totem Centre, it has 30+ shops, including a bowling alley and a massive Woolworths store. Stockland Balgowlah, one of the main highlights of the Totem, has 60+ retailers. The nearest major shopping centre is Westfield Warringah Mall which is only two kilometers north of Balgowlah. Just south of Stockland is the famous North Harbour Reserve, an ideal family picnic place that has several play areas for kids. Since it's near to both a busy road and the water, the park is fully fenced to ensure the children's safety. Just a few minutes away and you'll reach Forty Baskets Beach. It's a secret little beach with netted baths perfect for shallow water playtime and a boardwalk just to enjoy the cool breeze. It also has picnic areas for families.
Sharing the same 2093 postcode as Balgowlah, Balgowlah Heights sits on a ridge up to 80 metres above North Harbour and Middle Harbour, with panoramic views of the harbour, Eastern Suburbs and Spit Bridge. Washaway Beach is at the harbour's entrance. Because of its isolation, it offers ample privacy, making it perfect for nude bathing, especially on a weekday. It is a tidal beach so on high tides, little to no shoreline is exposed so prepare to just walk by the seaside or sit on the rocks. Another gem is Crater Cove, which has seven south-facing old huts that were believed to be occupied full time during the Great Depression in the 1930s, contributing to it becoming a historical site. Arabanoo Lookout honours an Aborigine named Arabanoo, a native who was captured during British colony's first year. He was considered to be the first Australian Aboriginal to live among Europeans. Tania Park is at the eastern part, with relaxed recreational areas like dog exercise spots, sporting facilities and play equipment. It's where one can observe the Manly ferry cut its way to Circular Quay and was named in honour of Tania Verstak, the first migrant to win the Miss Australia title in 1961. Believed to be an Aboriginal campsite, Reef Beach is currently a declared Aboriginal Place of the Gai-mariagal people, protected by NSW law. Fish and shield carvings become visible usually after a storm. It's mainly used as a nudist beach by locals. Since it's directly opposite Sydney Harbour Heads, Cutler Road Lookout is a great spot to observe ships going in and out of the harbour. Like Dobroyd Head, Grotto Point is part of Sydney Harbour National Park. It has a lighthouse and several Aboriginal rock carvings.
